Entries for month: June 2013

We are so excited to welcome Celebrity Chef Jody Adams at Miraval this weekend (Friday, June 28 & Saturday, June 29). Chef Adams is a James Beard Award winning chef and former competitor on BRAVO’s Top Chef Masters (Season Two). She is the creative visionary behind two of Massachusetts’ most loved restaurants: TRADE and the legendary Rialto. Chef Adams has also focused a large part of her career around humanitarian efforts, leading culinary-focused bike tours in Italy and raising millions of dollars for causes dear to her heart: most notably Partners in Health, Share Our Strength, which named her with their Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2010, and The Greater Boston Food Bank.

Marygrace Naughton, Miraval's Yoga and Meditation expert, is the featured specialist in the March chapter of our new book, Mindful Living Miraval. We asked Marygrace to share more about herself in the interview below, enjoy!

Miraval: Where are you from?

MN: I was born in Bogota, Columbia and raised in Hammonton, New Jersey.

Miraval: What is your favorite food?

MN: Italian

Miraval: Where is your favorite place to travel? Why?

MN: I loved traveling in Spain because of the friendliness of the people, the culture of resting in the heat of the day and celebrating in the evening.

Miraval: If you were stranded on a island, what are three things you would need?

MN: Good food, good water and good company. If I was stranded by myself, a way to journal and of course I would do my yoga and meditation practices.

Miraval: How has Miraval influenced your life?

MN: Miraval has brought possibilities into my life. I have developed as a yoga/meditation facilitator and have become more confident in my role as a supervisor. Miraval has given me the gift of being able to consistently share what I love with others to help enhance their well-being.

Miraval: What made you want to be in your profession?

MN: My love for yoga and meditation practice. These practices have helped me through some pretty difficult journeys in my life and have opened my heart and mind to a deep thankfulness for life as it is.

Miraval: What is your favorite activity/hobby to do in your free time?

MN: Yoga, hiking, reading a good book, sharing a meal and good wine with friends.

Miraval: Who is your biggest role model? Why?

MN: A dear friend of mine, Desa Rae, because she has a huge heart and nurturing spirit in spite of some very challenging, hurtful life experiences. She is resilient, playful and lives a full, healthy life. She chooses not to stay "in the box of suppose to" and makes her life an adventure.

Miraval: What does Miraval mean to you?

MN: Miraval means I show up at a job that I love, teach what I truly believe is beneficial and connect with others in a wholesome way. I have met wonderful people here, both guests and co-workers. Miraval is a place of change, growth, healing, and exploration. Miraval is a place to practice presence in order to expand one’s awareness.

Miraval: What is your biggest accomplishment in life?

MN: Raising two daughters who are empathetic, loving individuals who know how to think for themselves.

Miraval: What is #1 on your bucket list?

MN: I don't really have a bucket list, but I would absolutely love to see as much of the world as I can.

Miraval: What would you do if you won the lottery?

MN: I would travel, share the money with my family and donate to projects I am passionate about.

Miraval: What is the best advice you were given?

MN: When my brother died, a therapist told me it was as if we were both in a relay race and he just handed the baton to me...that it was my job to continue the race. I could experience that much loss and still keep going and living.

Miraval: What is your favorite holiday? Why?

MN: Christmas, because my grandmother's house was the warmest, most loving place to be. All of her ornaments and decorations were made by hand, her gifts were thoughtful and our family meals were always peaceful and delicious!

In honor of National Martini Day today (June 19), we wanted to share our favorite martini recipe—Miraval's Mindful Martini! Flavorful and refreshing, this easy martini recipe from our Mindful Eating Cookbook is perfect for a hot summer day. Enjoy!

It's easy to plan mother's day activities, right? Breakfast in bed, spa pampering, maybe a movie or a nice dinner? But what about Dads? Father's Day is just around the corner and if you're asking yourself, "What should we do for Father's Day?" - here's some ideas inspired by the Miraval experience to help get you started.

1. Go Outdoors

We offer hiking and mountain biking every day on our schedule of activities. The men who visit Miraval are often surprised that a destination spa has so many "outdoorsy" activities. Whether it's hiking or throwing a baseball in the backyard, Dads love to be outside. Maybe pack a picnic lunch and go hiking to a secluded beautiful spot. Plan something fun and surprise him!
