What are the best colors for the bedroom?
Are greys too cold?

Always buy a test can, lighting can do very interesting things and change colors drastically, a beautiful gray can turn pink or lavender in the wrong light! We definitely do not want that!

What were your first impression of the energy at the Miraval property in Lenox?

The first impression for me was really space and light. The light up there is amazing. Also, it was an invitation to explore wonderful outdoor spaces. I am a horse lover and I immediately imagined horses and riders trotting around the property.

What are some other tools and tips to implement Wabi Sabi in the home?

One of the things we do is interfere with surfaces. If it is shiny steel, sometimes needlescaling it will make it wabi-sabi. I also love buying repurposed objects that served in kitchens or art. Things that bring you joy.

What are Clodagh’s suggestions for head boards in the bedroom?

I love headboards that subsume the bed and bedside tables like in Miraval Berkshires. I say that the bed is the king (or queen )of a bedroom. I like to ground the bed.  A large headboard is very supportive and generous. You want to support the sleeper for peaceful sleep.

What are Clodagh’s key practices for keeping the bathroom simple and organized?

STORAGE! A place for everything and everything in its place. One thing we do is that we take up the space between the studs in a wall and make a mirrored full height cabinet where people can put all their essential oils and jewelry. We use shallow cabinets in bathrooms so that things aren’t lost behind other things. There is nothing more unnerving than clutter – it sucks energy.

What other ways can you bring the outside in? Especially in a small space?

Mirrors on a wall facing the exterior so it can reflect the outdoors. Sometimes if there is a tree outside, magically it is in your living room or bedroom because of the reflection. As far as plantings, I prefer low maintenance plants like succulents, in our studio, and my personal home, I have lined the sill of my windows with beautiful troughs of jade plants; which are not just biophilic but are considered lucky plants in Chinese mythology.

What is your top tip for improving the energy of your home?

Empty your closets and your kitchen cabinets and get rid of anything that is unused, out of date, and expired. If there is clothing that doesn’t fit anymore, give it away so that it doesn’t stare at you judging every time you open the closet door. Give everything away to charity for something that does not work for you might work for someone who needs it.  Have a friend in and a good bottle of wine for this exercise. Light a candle, finish the bottle and when you are done, clean the inside of the closets and cabinets before replacing what made the cut. When I am doing this I usually play some uplifting music, Reggae does it for me.

Here is a mopping formula our Feng Shui master recommends for getting rid of stagnant energy and at times of change:

1- Mop the entire floor of the office with the following mixture in a full bucket of warm water: adding one cup of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, plus 4 drops each of the Flower Remedy Gorse and also Elm,  20  drops of Peppermint Oil essence, and 20 drops of Palo Santo essence.  You should do that once a month and before an event or an important presentation.
