Did you know that it takes about three months for a new habit or shift in lifestyle patter to "take hold?" Research shows that even though positive results from a new habit or patter can be experienced quickly, it typically requires about three months of repitition for the new habit or pattern to fully replace the old one. Success in changing a habit or shifting a pattern comes through replacing it with a new one - not just trying to get rid of the old one. Here are three quick steps for supporting yourself through transition:
1. Notice - Allow yourself to be aware of what you are doing, feeling, or thinking. It takes only a split second to observe and notice yourself.
2. Acknowledge - Name what you are doing, feeling, or thinking. Do this without judgment, without creating inner tension. Even better, acknowledge with a curious smile or an amused giggle!
3. Choose - Now you have the opportunity to make a choice! You cna only make a mindful choice to do, feel, or think differently when you first become aware of what is.
Overall, be gentle with yourself. This habit or pattern has been learned over a long time and once served you in some way. You'll be more successful changing a habit or shifting a pattern through gentleness, curiosity, and non-judgment than through pressure and self-criticism!
