The “i” in Miraval

By Araxe Hajian

‘Who am I?’

It’s one of the most challenging questions we can ask ourselves, and it requires us to become observers—of the world and ourselves.

Inspired by an ancient tradition of mantra meditation, our colleagues wear name tags that say “I am,” followed by a word they have chosen to represent their essence. When colleagues join the Miraval family, they are asked to identify a word that expresses who they are.

How often do we sit down and ask ourselves this question?

Do you know who you are in one word?

Getting there requires reflection and introspection, and it takes time to land on one that feels right. Instead of relying on our experiences to define us, we can call upon our intuition to guide us.

Here’s what it’s not:

  • It’s not the word that describes who we wish we were.
  • It’s not what other people think we are.
  • It’s not a promise or a projection.
  • It’s not a goal or who we hope to be in our finer moments.

It is simply who we are at our core.

At Miraval Resorts, we ask everyone to allow themselves to be vulnerable. That process begins with our colleagues, who must reach into a space of vulnerability to identify and access the answer to this question, to distill it into one word.

It is a challenge and an opportunity to shine a light on who we really are, not who we wish to be or who others see in us.

When we identify with our source—our “i am”—we realize that we can clarify our view of life through that lens. Our actions align with our intentions, and we hold ourselves accountable to a higher level of authenticity. We can trust that this word, and all it represents, can guide us to interact with the world with presence and purpose.

The Miraval nametag is an aligned expression of the self—one that supports the wearer and those around them, serving the highest good in the present moment, without judgment or attachment to an outcome.

The answer isn’t just the name given to us by our parents or a label given to us by an institution. It’s a word that represents our true nature and guides what we do every single day.

Celebrating our Colleague “i am” Series

Stay tuned and keep checking back in this space for an ongoing celebration of our Miraval colleagues. We are excited to shine a light on our colleagues’ “i am” statements in the upcoming months as we share the stories of their unique talents, passions, and personalities. Learn more about how their word informs and balances their work and personal journeys.
